ARTISTS' OPENING RECEPTION, MARCH 8, 7-9PM
C. Feign Jr. is pleased to present Arcadia, featuring the artwork of Gary Brewer, Kiyomi Fukui , Flora Kao, Pam Posey, Yevgeniya Mikihailik , Tim Musso, and Erynn Richardson. The collaborative will hold a public opening reception on March 8th, 2014, from 7-9pm. The works selected for Arcadia shed new light on the artistic tradition of creation through direct observation and the artist's relationship to their environment.
As societies’ ideas about nature change, so does the artist’s approach to representation.
These evolving visual depictions help craft a collective consciousness of an ever changing landscape, where the spectator plays a central role in recording the dynamism of a complex series of relationships, as they happen, in the natural world.
The woodcuts and engravings of Tim Musso abstract natural processes. He attempts to reveal the hidden aspects of the natural world and bring to attention life and decay of the forest. Though the images are in many ways aestheticized depictions, their intent is often one of didacticism.
The tiny rocks that Pam Posey delicately renders in pastoral hues become synechdoche for all of the landscape in which they are found. They are souvenirs of the personal journey, but also take on a monumental aspect in their own right as they’re drawn isolated and cold.
Gary Brewer approaches natural observation from the perspective of an abstract painter. The lichens and orchids that float with almost surreal coloration on vivid, theatrical backgrounds are impossible couplings of aquatic life, where Brewer employs a re-imagining of life-sustainging flora; a presentation of impossible beauty that is a mediation on the complicated life system just below the water's surface.
